MUSC 306 - Foundations of Jazz

Credit Hours: 2

In Foundations of Jazz, we will explore the history and music theory of jazz from its origins to the modern day, analyzing the music of major jazz musicians from different eras and styles, and the contexts in which they composed and performed. This course is partly research-based and partly practical. We will research the cultural events and historical perspectives that impacted jazz, and we will also learn to identify and notate jazz harmonies and melodies, chord substitutions, and solos.

Prerequisite: MUSC 205  or instructor permission
