MUSC 313 - Music and Theft: The Ethics of Appropriation

Credit Hours: 3

This course explores the history of musical borrowing in Euro-American culture from Plato to “Blurred Lines”; plainchant to hip hop; Ancient Greece to cyberspace. Throughout history, music has been shaped by cultural cross-fertilizations, often interpreted as musical “theft.” This course traces the musical borrowings that have built creative culture, but also examines the attempts- philosophical, religious, political, racial, and legal- to control who owns a musical idea.
