This course explores the historical range of musical expression in Black American culture. Topics include the aesthetic characteristics, social context, complex meanings, and lasting impact of a variety of genres associated with Black Americans. These include: Spirituals, Ragtime, the Blues, Jazz, Gospel, R&B, Soul, Funk, and Hip Hop.
